Water and sanitation services, along with proper hygiene are essential factors to ensure the survival and development of children and families worldwide. Egypt has made significant progress in reaching the population with access to water and sanitation services throughout the country, and there is still much more that needs to be done. The Government of Egypt continues with its efforts to ensure that all Egyptians enjoy their human right for safe drinking water and sanitation.
Although, Egypt is the “Land of the Nile”, the longest river in the world, it is not the only source of water for Egyptians. The fact remains that Egypt, is a water scarce country, and faces more future water stress that is affected by a growing population and climate change. Now is the time that Egyptians must take more responsibility in treating water as a precious resource.
The Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, under the auspices of the Ministry of Housing and Utilities and Urban Communities has embarked on a national communication campaign to raise the awareness of the Egyptian public about water and sanitation. The first phase of this campaign launched in 2010 is implemented in partnership with UNICEF Egypt and aims to ensure that awareness is raised among all stakeholders for the improvement of healthy and sanitary conditions, as well as motivating the adoption of healthy behavioural practices throughout the country. Only with the sustainable collaborative action from partners and stakeholders will this campaign have a sustained impact to maintain the quality of water and sanitation services, as well as preserve the water resources, for better health of future generations.
